Full Moon Meaning and Ayurvedic, Yoga Practice

Essentially, full moons are the sign of nourishing. The moon, which symbolises the feminine, receives the light of the sun and shines it back to the earth with illumination .When it is the time of full moon, its strong gravitational pull on the Earth makes a time of peak creative energy and incredibly powerful intuitive breakthroughs. It’s about reflection. The full moon focuses attention on things that you’ve been working on during the past few weeks.

According to Ayurveda, the detoxing and cleansing methods and its suitable time are designed based on not only the type of your body but also the phase of the moon, which is also similar to the yoga practice. As we know that the human body consists of 70% water, it is undeniable that it is the fact the moon has a strong influence on our body and mind, as anything that influences the body influences the mind, too.

There's a yoga practice as well as Ayurvedic Cleansing ruled by the period of the Moon. It is called a spiritual fasting, which people will fast 4 days before Full Moon and 4 days before New Moon (on the 11th lunar day). It is commonly followed in South India.

Spiritual Fasting Methods

It is scientifically proved that Fasting does bring significant benefits for many diseases. There are many different ways of fasting. On the 11th lunar day, you may choose the fasting level which you feel more comfortable with before you move on to the extreme way. Here are the 5 levels of fasting:

  1. No grains and pulses or lentils  — you can have fruits, which retain relatively less water.

  2. No solid food  — not even fruits and nuts.

  3. Only fluids  —  like fruit juices and lemonade.

  4. Water Only  —  you only sip water throughout the day.

  5. Complete Fast   —  which is also called "nirjal upvasa" , "no water fast"

There are also different fasting ways in Ayurveda to help one cleansing totally based on your body type. If you find it hard to fast but still seek a natural way to level up your spiritual practice and to improve your health, do try one of the fasting methods mentioned above and do it at least once per month.
